Maybe it’s because I just read this excellent post by mills, but I would restate this to say “You are a metaphor for the rules you live by”.
I’d also add that good people are not victims of their internal moral compass, and although I know what this sign is getting at, I think it’s the kind of aphorism that sounds best if you don’t know any better. It’s good to shake people out of their myopic and lethargic attachment to the paradigms they were spoon-fed by parent and teachers, but it’s critical that something more morally vital is on hand to embrace; flippantly throwing out the baby with the bathwater is almost always a bad idea..

I’m with you Tami. While these aphorisms hold a certain romantic or poetic attraction, I don’t think it is possible to navigate the roiling waters of life without rules and boundaries. It is more about questioning and analyzing those rules and seeing whether they still hold true and are morally sound. There are good rules and bad rules. While some rules victimize us individually, in that they may require some deprivation or sacrifice on our part, those rules are still beneficial for the reason that they serve a bigger picture, being the orderly functioning of society, from which we all benefit. As in every thing, there are no absolutes.
